Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced plans to construct cruise terminals at four strategic locations, aiming to bolster the country’s cruise tourism infrastructure as part of its masterplan.

Speaking on state media, MPL’s Research and Development Consultant, Anil Adam, shared that feasibility studies are underway in partnership with a Greek consultancy firm to evaluate the project’s potential. The initiative will move forward following consultations with industry experts.

The proposed terminals will be developed in Uligan (Haa Alif Atoll), Fonadhoo (Laamu Atoll), and Hithadhoo (Addu City). Additionally, MPL plans to repurpose land on Thilafushi (Kaafu Atoll) for tourism-related developments, including a cruise terminal, after relocating the island’s existing commercial port.

Anil also revealed that MPL has been working closely with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure regarding the project. Furthermore, MPL has signed an agreement with the Uligan Island Council to proceed with terminal development there, marking significant progress.

The Maldives has seen a surge in cruise ship arrivals during peak tourism seasons, but large vessels are currently docked near Malé City or anchored outside island lagoons, causing logistical challenges. The new terminals aim to address these issues by improving access and elevating the Maldives as a leading cruise tourism destination.

This initiative reflects MPL’s commitment to advancing the Maldives’ tourism infrastructure and supporting the nation’s broader economic development.
