Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort has formed a significant partnership with the MaRHE Centre at the University of Milano-Bicocca to support marine research in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, with a focus on the area's unique resident dolphin populations. This collaboration aims to explore why these dolphins remain in the region—a rare behavior in the Maldives—and to study their diet, population structure, and species identification using molecular ecology.

The partnership also covers research on coral reefs and reef fish, broadening the understanding of the southern Maldives’ marine ecosystems. The project, coordinated by Professor Paolo Galli, Director of the MaRHE Centre, offers hands-on research opportunities for marine biology students.

A special event will be held on December 12, 2024, at the resort to present current findings to key stakeholders in the Maldives. The collaboration, facilitated by Italian Consul Giorgia Marazzi, also involves two master’s students who are conducting fieldwork under the guidance of expert cetologist Elena Valsecchi. Their research includes photo identification, vocalization recordings, and environmental DNA analysis.

This partnership is a crucial step in preserving the unique marine ecosystems of the southern Maldives and promoting eco-tourism.
